Jill West – “Headline Blues” CD

After winning the local International Blues Challenge two times and placing third in the nation on one occasion… After playing heavily in this region and traveling great distances to please audiences far and wide… What could Jill West do to make headlines with that "Extra! Extra! Read all About It" spark?

Well… She could grab some of the regions best players, mix them in with her already “smoking hot band” and crank out a CD that is so good that you will leave it spinning in the player for weeks on end…STOP THE PRESSES!!!! That’s just what she did!!!

Blues Attack has always been a “special operations level” group of musical commandos. This still holds true today. The fiery guitar of Greg Krupa and the rock solid hands of “Keymaster” Sudden Steve on the ivories display different tactics on the battlefield, but the same amount of shear firepower as before.

For this CD they have called in reinforcements:

Don Hollowood- Guitar
Mark Cholewski- Guitar
Trisha West-Vocals
Jack Sanzo-Harp
Phil Brontz-Sax
Reggie Watkins-Trombone
Ian Gordon on Trumpet
The Church Recording Studio Choir
And more….

My first requirement to call a CD great is:

Can you listen to it from cover to cover without having to skip over the filler songs? I am pleased to say that all of these tracks are songs you will want to hear again and again.
There is no need to wear out the skip button. Just enjoy! Now that is good news!

Felix takes a Prison Break!

Felix and the Hurricanes are known to play many gigs on the correctional facility circuit.
This is not uncommon; many great artists have done this throughout the years. B.B.King, Johnny Cash, and of course the King himself, "Elvis" did the "Jail House Rock."

After winning the International Blues Challenge for Western Pennsylvania. Felix could boast the title "King of the Blues" for Western PA. (if he was the Boasting sort)
In the next round he will take on talent from across the USA and all over the globe.

Will he be the next "King of the Blues?"
Who knows? He’s got the chops and an army of crazed fans!
He could be the next blues artist to take America by storm!

So Felix appears to be taking a break from the prison circuit and this is good news for his loyal law abiding fans. They will no longer have to ponder whether or not to commit a felony just so they can take in a great free blues show.

For his next big gig, Felix will rock the  Pittsburgh Blues Festival July 26th at 6:45pm. Felix will team up with Barbara Blue for an unforgettable set!! This is "Blues Magic" in the making!

Tuesday June 30th Felix and the Hurricanes
will be at the Cresson Carnival 8-11pm

Friday July 3rd the boys will ride the Iron Horse Cafe in Gallitzin PA at 10pm

You can always see them at Shaw’s Bar every Sunday @ 10pm

“QUEEN OF THE BLUES” KOKO TAYLOR 1928 – 2009

This is turning out to be a very sad year, I think I will forever have the Blues.

Blues Mega legend Koko Taylor, 80, past away on June 3, 2009 in Chicago, IL, as a result of complications following her surgery on May 19.  This surgery was to correct a gastrointestinal bleed.

On May 7, 2009, The “Queen of the Blues,” won her 29th Blues Music Award (for Traditional Female Blues Artist Of The Year), She has won more Blues Music Awards than any other artist. In 2004 she received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is among the highest honors received by any American artist. 2007’s Old School, her most recent CD, was nominated for a Grammy (eight of her nine Alligator albums were Grammy-nominated).  In 1984 She won a Grammy for her work on Blues Explosion on Atlantic.
